The Beginner’s Guide to Work at Home Jobs

work at home

It’s always been my dream to be a stay at home mom. It’s okay right now that I go through the day-to-day motions of going to work 40 hours a week, but what about when I have kids? Don’t get me wrong, I can definitely appreciate a woman who wants to have a career and a family, and I have a lot of friends who love it! And as much as I would like to be a stay at home mom, we live in California, land of expensive living, so as of now, it seems I will need to pull in an income.

So, I ask myself, how can I make decent money while staying at home? Well, you’ve all heard the term Work at Home Mom!

There are so many ways to earn money from the comfort of the couch in your pajamas! However, there are a few things to keep in mind before you go quitting your stable 9-5.

Here are a few things you should consider:

How much time can you realistically work during the day?

If you don’t have kids, like me, then you probably have unlimited time throughout the day. However, if you have two kids in diapers, that may be a different story. So, assess your situation before deciding which type of work at home situation you can realistically accommodate.

What kinds of skills do you have?

Like I mentioned earlier, there are many ways to earn money from home. You likely qualify for many jobs out there, so first things first, you should access what types of skills you have and what jobs those skills translate into.

If you are a hair stylist, for example, maybe you can turn your spare bedroom into a beauty salon. Maybe you are a great writer who can do some freelance blogging. Or you could be an amazing photographer who would love to start a wedding photography business. Are you just super good at customer service and would love to talk to customers a few hours a day?

These are all great options! And believe me, there are so many more!

What types of jobs are out there?

Working from home, you have a world of opportunity open to you. But there are three basic categories that work at home jobs fall into:

  1. Employee
  2. Freelance
  3. Home-based Business

Employee

You’ll have a boss, a company you work for, and you will work much like you would in an office. You’ll just be at home and probably have quite a few more video conferences.

Freelance

You’ll work for yourself with a freelance position, but it will be up to you to find yourself jobs and make enough money.

An example of a freelance job would be a graphic designer or website developer. A company may only need some work done on their website, not a full-time position filled.

Home-Based Business

For those of you with an entrepreneurial streak, you can start your own business. Starting your own business can be difficult, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Home-based businesses can be anything from direct sales to turning your hobby into a moneymaking endeavor. Whatever you decide, it should be something you love.

To become an employee, you can search job websites just like you would when looking for jobs outside of your home. Just be sure to include keywords such as “work at home”, “remote” or “telecommute” in your search.

For freelance jobs, you can start with signing up on a freelance marketplace, such as Upwork. Another great option is to search job postings for freelance work or even start your own freelance business.

And last, but certainly not least, starting a home-based business. You can’t exactly search for this online, but within yourself. Starting a business can be a lot of hard work, but with some time and motivation, you can be making more money than a traditional job and be your own boss!
